Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry, has been an important plant in Ayurvedic and traditional indigenous medicine for over 3000 years. Historically the plant has been used as an aphrodisiac, a liver tonic, anti-inflammatory and astringent. Currently ashwagandha is used for its adaptogenic tonic properties. Adaptogens represent a class of plant compounds able to increase in a non-specific way the resistance of the body to varied physical and mental stress, resulting useful in periods of emotional and physical overload.
PURE ASHWAGANDHA + contains the ashwaganda branded KSM-66® Ashwaganda obtained through an innovative method based on “green chemistry” principles that does not involve the use of chemical solvents. The part of the plant used is the root that presents a complete spectrum of active ingredients in their original balance. The effectiveness of the dry extract derives from the whole of its components including alkaloids (withanine), somniferine, tropine and steroidal lactones including withanolides. Several clinical studies have been conducted on the activity of ashwagandha which confirmed its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, improve memory and cognitive abilities, increase muscle strength and endurance, improve testosterone levels in men and antiaging activities . Its adaptogen-antistress effect can also be useful in low-calorie diets to combat nervous hunger.
A clinical study conducted on 50 athletes for a period of 8 weeks, treated with 600 mg/day of dry extract, showed that ashwagandha KSM-66 has a positive effect on increasing strength and muscle mass. In fact it stimulates the increase in testosterone levels, which promotes the increase in muscle mass and decreases the levels of cortisol, a known hormone with a catabolic effect. It also helps the body improve its natural steroid production which in turn increases protein synthesis.
Another clinical study involving 49 athletes treated with a dose of 600 mg/day for 12 weeks showed that ashwagandha can improve performance and energy production (ATP) in muscles, through three main mechanisms:
- inhibiting the ATPase enzyme responsible for the breakdown of the ATP;
- increasing the levels of creatine which results in greater production of rapid energy for muscle contraction and movement;
- increasing the level of succinate dehydrogenase.
Finally it was shown that it increases physical endurance and reduces fatigue, increasing the activity of red blood cells and thus guaranteeing greater V02max in endurance athletes.
Studies on 64 volunteers treated for 8 weeks (600mg/day dose) have shown that ashwagandha affects the response of the nervous system during periods of stress due to particular school commitments (exams), intense training or competitions and difficult personal relationships. Periods of stress are accompanied by elevated levels of circulating cortisol; being an adaptogen, ashwagandha regulates the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal gland axis and reduces cortisol levels. It also possesses GABAergic activity which results in a reduction of neuronal overexcitation, thus producing calm, reducing stress and increasing concentration, mental well-being and self-control. It is also claimed that it reduces the stress-induced increase in plasma corticosterone, blood urea nitrogen and blood lactic acid.
Another typical activity of adaptogenic plants and therefore of PURE ASHWAGANDHA + is the improvement in memory and cognitive capacity. It has been shown that it can significantly improve memory deficits and prevent the loss of axons, dendrites and synapses, elements involved in the transmission of nerve impulses, promoting regeneration and reconstruction. These effects appear to be mediated by a cholinergic effect and antioxidant action. Thanks to the latter it can rebalance the levels of glutathione in the brain and accelerate cellular restorative processes which, especially in athletes, allows obtaining faster recovery between training sessions and reducing the chances of injury.
Finally an in vitro study has shown that it strengthens the immune system as it stimulates a greater proliferation of T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes and NK cells (natural killer), cells involved in the immune response that can destroy pathogens directly or indirectly.
The use of this supplement is not recommended in pregnancy, when taking anticonvulsant drugs, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, phenytoin, pyrimidone, tricyclic antidepressants, valproic acid, zolpidem. It is advisable to stop taking it when approaching any surgical operations involving general anaesthesia.
